This is an old plan of an Ocean Bird I
was given when I bought mine. It shows the shape of the spade rudder.
When mine broke I was half way between Gibraltar and Morocco, with
monsters steaming down on me from all directions! I limped into a
Spanish town, 'Barbate de Frango' where they build wooden fishing boats.
They cut out a rectangle of wood, and I planed it down to a rough
aerofoil shape. Unfortunately I don't know the name of the wood, just
"This is what we use for rudders". It still seems as solid and strong as
new and that was 15 years ago. It is 'balanced' by swinging it forward
(towards the prop) until it is so light you can steer with two fingers. |
