Boat is building nicely. It was an absolute pain
and waste of time gluing up long strips. What a dumb idea! Makes it much
easier to stagger your joints if you have different loose lengths to
choose from. The pneumatic roofing stapler is the best tool in the world
for stripping. The wide 1" staples clamp joints and adjoining strips in
line between frames and are easy to pull out. I'm convinced that
Titebond II would be the perfect glue to use after messing with Excel (
polyurethane). Cheaper, easier to use, easier to clean up , and
stronger. After all the epoxy / fiberglass is supposed to keep all
moisture out of the wood and glue joints. If it doesn't what good is
waterproof glue anyway? We had some scarf joint failures while handling
the long strips. I suspect the end grain sucked up the glue. Makes me
nervous. Thank goodness for glass! However, I edge glued big, heavy
particle board frames with it and it never budged. After a screaming
match with my brother and a staple through my finger I had to admit that
he was right. It is preferable to put the glue on what will be the
bottom edges. This way you can push down keeping your hands out of the
glue. Also when you stop you have a dry edge on top ready to receive the
next wet plank. We hit that spot where the "stealers" are supposed to
come into play. I was sure I knew exactly how to handle this little
detail. But I don't! Better look up some pictures again... |
