Some fotos taken of the
launching of Manurere in Oxnard, California. It was a beautiful
occasion. We met at the construction yard where Glen had been living
during the build, 5 or 6 people working until late that night to get
the last details done. She was towed down to the public boat ramp by
a pickup very early the next morning and launched in the dark on the
morning of the 8th of October, with the help of a larger group that
had arrived early that morning. Kiko from Hawaii was there to assist
with the sail raising and the techniques of putting the crab claw
rig together.
The first sail was a short hop up a very narrow canal to register
for the night with local officialdom, some of whom were compelled to
visit several times to talk about the boat and her history. The
first voyage was the following day up the coast to Santa Barbara
where Glen will be living and preparing for the adventures to come.
Contrary winds made the 25 miles a long but pleasant journey and she
made anchorage late the following morning.
Manurere was a delight to sail, very responsive to the single
rudder, easy to tack with the right technique, responsive to the
wind and with easy motion in the water. Glen was ecstatic with her.
Glen did an excellent job with the construction of Maunrere, she was
beautiful to the eye.
