Tirla, the
monocoque Pahi 45, had her keelshoes replaced in Greece. Steve Turner
went out to do the job with the owner... |

Above you see the stage where the hardwood strip is resting on the
old keel. The load from the extra width is transferred to the hull
by an epoxy fillet. (the white material). Next came three layers of
glass and epoxy, wrapped round the hard wood over the fillet and up
to the area where we had ground back the hull. This was then ground
back, filled and then fine sanded to get an even surface. After that
the new stainless steel band was added to the bottom. The whole area
was then epoxy primed and antifouled ready for launching. Not much
work if you say it quickly! |

The starboard hull, at the base of the new extension keel, the red
area awaits sanding after filler had been worked into the surface. |

Steve Turner
returned to the UK having successfully managed to oversee the
construction of our new keel shoes. They certainly look extremely
robust! Our keel now have the original stainless steel keel band, of
some 3 x 25mm, added below is a hardwood strip 25 x 50 cm, this is
secured by three layers of glass fibre/epoxy onto the hull, and
finally a 3 x 50 mm steel keel band. Steve had Fae and I well under
control. Steve passed on some of his tips which he had learnt the hard
way over many years. We would not have attempted this without him
being here. During all the above work the weather has been superb. Our
only problem was one day when the wind flapped the wet glass cloth,
which we were trying to bond onto the hull, like washing in the
breeze. The marina staff tell us the weather has been nearly 10 C
above normal, this was ideal for our project. |
